This picture by photographer Andrew Locking captures a herd of Herdwick sheep at the head of Buttermere. In the background is the foot of Haystacks, the path to the summit on the right hand side. Herdwick Sheep are an icon of the Lake District, having been bred in the Lakes for hundreds of years. They wander the Lakeland fells freely, having been bred to withstand the worst elements of the Lake District weather. They make a huge contribution to the heritage and landscape of the Lake District.
