Top Things to do in Winter in the Lake District

After the recent snowfall, the Lake District is looking more wintery and picturesque than ever. There's still lots to do in the area during the winter months, often offering quiet fells and car parks and cheaper accommodation deals. It’s a magical season with breathtaking scenery that’s ready to be explored.

Take a cold plunge

Use our Wild Swimmers Lap Map to find local wild swimming spots to enjoy a cold water swim. The recent health benefits of cold water swimming have been widely publicised to aid mental health and release endorphins that will leave you feeling invigorated. Ensure to follow health and safety guidelines on our map.

Enjoy lunch an independent cafe

Cosy up indoors and enjoy a break from the cold weather by indulging in some local cuisine. There are so many great independently run cafes and eateries around the Lake District that have something for everyone. Some of our favourite places include Chesters by the River near Skelwith bridge, Joey’s Cafe based at Wray Castle and Homeground in the centre of Windermere village.

Warm up in a visitor attraction

The Lake District is not just famed for its outdoor activities, there is also a lot of Cumbrian heritage and culture to discover. Historic houses, museums and art galleries are plentiful and can be found on our Lake District Visitor’s Lap Map. Cumbria has a rich history including ancient traces from the Romans to later arrivals coming to be inspired like William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter.

Go on a winter walk

Enjoy the beautiful sights the Lake District offers at this time of year. Our Go Cards have some lovely, family friendly walk ideas that are suitable to do during the winter, like Stockghyll Force in Ambleside and Aira Force in Ullswater. Ensure you wrap up warm and take extra layers with you just in case the weather takes a turn. Having the correct footwear and equipment is vital for winter hiking.
